sven laux – unfound sketches

Berlin’s Sven Laux has done anything but conform. His unique take on music making has him sharing the company of artisans like Pheek, Ezekiel Honig and Marc Neyen. In a discography that stretches as far back as 2006, there remains a prevalent underlying passion for the obscure.

Though we’ve yet to see micro production really take off in over ten years of its evolution, this doesn’t seem to discourage a throng of talented visionaries dedicated to the clicks and cuts craft. Sven, coming off a full length debut on Microcosm that had writers buzzing, has been staying the course with releases on 31337, Villar Village and his latest for Unfoundsound Records.

Unfound Sketches has to be Laux’s most fluid work to date. Six sedative compositions each perform their part beautifully. Drifting drones seemingly glide over patchy beats riddled with familiar blips and clacks leaving the listener in a calmative trance. Plenty of chopped-up foundsounds keep things feeling organic throughout. Wonderful stuff from a pioneer in his field.

eric delay – four moments

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Eric Delay. Selections from his 2006 Fragment release, “Kindheitstraum” have been playing over the stream for years. They remain just as relevant to our project today as they did back then.

Eric is from a small Russian river city known as Ulyanovsk. It used to be difficult to find any information about him. In fact, a recent article on Far From Moscow is one of the first publicized features to date. FUSELab has actually been hinting on Eric’s return for months. It’s only fitting for them to introduce a new year with his latest work. No complaints here, as all good things are worth the wait.

“Four Moments” is about as modest as they come. Advances in Delay’s post production techniques are immediately evident as sounds are much brighter this time around. Faints cries of childhood laughter tip toe behind sparkling pads and gaiety rhythms. It’s a quick listen, but Eric provides just enough here to warrant a warm welcome back.

nils frahm – for

Discovered this track while browsing umanuvem, thought I’d pass it along. Nils Frahm is a classically trained pianist turned electronic music producer now residing in Berlin. As the founder of Durton Studio, he works with like-minds including Simon Scott, Deaf Center, Anne Müller and Peter Broderick. Nils has been touring heavily all over the world since 2010 and will share the stage this year with Canadian Tim Hecker.

This track, taken from his latest EP on Erased Tapes has all the elements of a timeless electronic anthem. You can grab the EP here. It’s also available as a limited 7″ vinyl.

Σ-fly (sigmafly) – tetrachrome ep

I’m absolutely in love with this label at the moment. It wasn’t until this release was I even aware of it, but thanks to Manchester’s Tom Holmes did I continue to dig and bask in the works of both Rain Dog and Essáy as well.

Cut Music is setting the bar high for netlabels, providing all of their releases for free by passing the word along via Twitter. Their tranquil aesthetic compliments a catalog that fuses elements of downbeat, hiphop and dubstep, or as Essay’s work coins, “ambstep”. Whatever your step, this is a label following the beat of their own drum and they’ve continued to introduce ground breaking work for the price of a click.
