Review: Mi – Tributury

Archipel‘s latest full length effort comes from Santa Fe’s Ben Wright. It’s his first solo venture, spawned by a decade of making music with the talented post-rock trio D Numbers, and his first official album since the band’s 2010 self-released, “ONDA”.

In Wright’s debut he depicts ardent shades of funk and jazz, sensibly sheltered in a humble burrow of minimal constructions. Years of experience playing live have given Wright’s programming a boundless air. Keys dance atop flighty rhythms, scantly held together by more dependable bass progressions. Some of the arrangements are so nostalgic that you might find yourself immersed in a lost soundtrack to a retro gaming experience Wright had been playing in his sleep. That’s not to take a single thing away from the quality of this work, the album is just as fun as it is moving.

Tributury presents an array of themes, from the funk-driven intensity of, “Morning Med”, to the dusk-drawn allurement of, “By Decades”. It’s an album with plenty to offer and lots to discover for those committing to a few spins. Each track is collectively stronger, together painting a much broader vision of the motivation behind Mi. An absolute perfect fit for the aesthetic fans have come to trust from Archipel.
